Allele

Allele refers to a variant form of a gene. Each gene has a specific chromosome location, resulting in two copies. One copy of the gene is inherited from each parent. If these two copies differ from each other, they are known as alleles. Differing traits among individuals are in part due to differences in the alleles they carry. Some allelic variations among people do not result in visibly detectable differences.
